1 SCOPE

This document describes the methods for measuring tyre-to-road noise emissions from tyres fitted on the test vehicle under coast-by conditions. Coast-by refers to the motion state in which the vehicle is in tyre free-rolling, non-powered operation. This is typically achieved by putting the transmission in the neutral or equivalent position and switching off the engine as well as all auxiliary systems not necessary for safe driving.

This document is applicable to passenger car tyres and truck tyres, but is not applicable for measuring the noise from tyres when the vehicle is operating in normal conditions or measuring the traffic noise and nuisance at a given location when the vehicle is operating in normal conditions.
